The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix
5.0
Just pure fun, and the first book in a long time I've stayed up to finish. Steel Magnolias meets Dracula is pretty spot on, and whilst I expected a romp akin to a middle-aged housewife version of Buffy, I was not fully prepared for all the legit, varied horror in here. Everything from body horror to psychological, domestic, and gore gets a look in. There's a definite love for the genre and it plays a lot with the reader knowing more than the characters (so you can fully enjoy every terrible decision), humans often being more monsterous than the monster, and walking the fine line of making the characters flawed and assholey in a lot of ways, but less bad than the things around them so you still want them to succeed and so the emotional beats still hit pretty hard. It's not likely to change your life, but it does what it does really well and is an entertaining ride throughout, so highly recommended.
