The Late Mattia Pascal by Luigi Pirandello

The only flaw is a small subplot involving spiritualism, not just because it's dated poorly but because it's not very elegantly integrated with the rest of the story. The rest is up there with Camus's "The Plague" & "The Outsider", and Sartre's "Nausea". And a whole lot funnier, too.
