They Said This Would Be Fun: Race, Campus Life, and Growing Up by Eternity Martis

5.0

Wow. This book. Let me just catch my breath here because I’ve had it knocked out of me by this absolute gem of a book. In her memoir, THEY SAID THIS WOULD BE FUN, Eternity Martis showcases the disgusting and degrading way Black people—Black women especially—are treated in Canada. These are heavy situations that have surrounded her and somehow she ends up telling them with humour and wit, while also educating those who read along about subject matter that should be discussed by all; Racism. Misogynoir. Sexual Abuse/Violence. Just to name a few.

Although I obviously can’t relate to the racism aspect of this book, there were quite a few moments that really hit home. It just reminded me of how incredibly strong our author really is! I’ll happily read anything by her and support her in any other ventures. Eternity, you’re absolutely amazing and thank you for sharing parts of your life with us.

I highly recommend this book to, well, just about anyone! Especially white Canadians or white people in general.
