The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

4.0

I have such mixed feelings on this book.

The beginning had me hooked. The middle almost lost me entirely. And the ending stunned me and had me reaching for Michaelides' next story.

If you've read others of my reviews, you likely know that random sex scenes within a thriller or another totally unnecessary genre often give me the ick. This was one of my problems with The Silent Patient. That, and the main character that I really didn't care about. He was so blasé, it might as well have been any other character. He didn't have enough of a personality or feelings to make him stand out.

If you're considering reading one of Michaelides' books, I would recommend skipping this one and hopping straight to The Maidens. There is a brief callback to this book in it, but it is honestly not worth it, in my opinion.

That being said, I think Michaelides' writing is fantastic. I will definitely be reading more from him in the future, after The Maidens. He has loads of potential, and I see him having a successful writing career for many years to come.

Update: After much thought and contemplation, I’ve decided this is more of a four star book for me than three. Maybe it’s that I like The Maidens so much. Maybe it’s that his writing is just that good in retrospect. I don’t know. It’s a four-starrer now, baby.
