This book reads like an awkward stream of consciousness from an 'insecure but actually overconfident' white British man. Andy Bellows is addicted to the Internet and is diagnosed as such: he embarks on two months sans Internet and social media.
Straight off the bat, there is a hugely unfunny anti-Asian joke. Published in 2020, with a joke about East Asian surnames? No thanks.
Bellows navigates modern life sans Internet and digital devices in a way that feels hugely blown out of proportion. We can drive on roads without requiring Google Maps – there are roadsigns and your own eyeballs to see literal roads. Of course, there's a meet cute, but the descriptions of and interactions with women are unbearable. The pacing is also a little all over the place: there are several scenarios in this book that feel unconnected somehow, as though they belong in multiple books. Then, another handful of anti-Asian sentiments and 'jokes'. By the fourth, I gave up on this ✌️
