Need by Carrie Jones was very easy to get into, and was also very quick at getting into the main story, which was one thing that I really liked about it.
Zara, the main character, was very likable and you really understood how she felt throughout the story. Her personality could get a bit confusing though as I said in Update #2. She can go from really kick-butt and fearless, to a wimp in a matter of a few pages or less. Two of the other main characters, Nick and Betty were very well developed and where a big part of the story, while others such as Meghan, Ian, Issie and Devyn weren’t as developed, and didn’t play as big a part of the story as expected. Also Meghan and Ian seemed to disappear for a time in the book, then reappear later.
The plot was fairly predictable, and fast-paced, again as I mentioned before. The “big reveals” weren’t as big as I feel like Jones may have wanted them to be. Although the story was original, (and nothing like Twilight, as some of the reviews on this book had said), I think that it could have been done a little better. And one more thing that it was lacking that let me down a little bit, was that there wasn’t ever a revival of the classic YA love triangle that I mentioned and hoped for, in my update. But, it was nice to not have to story focused as much on that, like many other YA novels, which made this a bit different. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the book very much, but it wasn’t as scary and suspenseful as the synopsis of the book made it out to be.
There are two other books in this series by Carrie Jones, but I am still not quite sure whether I am going to read them or not, because if I hadn’t heard of these other books, I wouldn’t have any idea that there were going to be sequels, strictly based on the ending of the book.
With all that said, I think that this book would be good for fairly new YA readers, in middle school, and early teens. It is a good starter book to help them get into reading more YA books, and isn’t as deep as some. Why am I being so negative here?! Even for older YA readers, if you are looking for a fun and quick fantasy read, check this book out!
