5⭐️ 3🌶️
MOOD: adventurous, lighthearted, funny, tense
TROPES: office romance, possibly fated mates, grumpy/sunshine
GENRES: magic/fantasy, contemporary, lgbtq+
FAV QUOTE: "I'm glad I amuse you. I took out an entire city street because I couldn't control myself, but at least I made you laugh."
MAIN CHARACTERS: Isaac Silverbreeze and Maverick Van Buren
Two things: I did not read book 1 and this is the first book by Amy Padilla that I've read. Getting that out of the way - this was better than I expected.
THE GOOD: I was expecting just full on grumpy boss romance and this was definitely more than that. I really liked the world; even though I didn't read book one it was easy to get familiar with the different types of beings and magic users. Both Isaac and Maverick and interesting and their dynamic over the course of the story was great to read. They both have strong personalities and a stubborn streak. Also their interactions, particularly Isaac's, with the side characters actually add to their dynamic as well as building out the world and furthering the plot. It's been awhile since a book has surprised me by exceeding my expectations even when I do enjoy it and I can say that this one was one of those stories.
THE NEUTRAL: I was waiting for some on-page resolution with Isaac & that class.
THE MEH: Not necessarily bad but I think the last chapter and the epilogue are the weakest parts of the story.
CW: sexual content, mentions of war and PTSD
DISCLAIMER: I received an advance review copy. This is my honest review.
