Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk
5.0
What an incredible book! The central character is completely bonkers and very amusing. She has all sorts of weird ideas about the world, but what catches you off-guard is that in amongst the astrology and pseudoscience, her thoughts on the hypocrisy of the Catholic Church in Poland and the barbarism of hunting have more than a grain of truth to them. The book is nominally a detective story, but the murders are on the one hand almost peripheral and on the other hand quite central in the end (this is not a simplistic book) and in fact it is a book which doesn't easily fit into any standard category - often a good sign of excellent literature. I was reading the book 'in preparation' for a trip to Poland and last year cycled around area close to where it is set, so that certainly gave it an extra dimension. But even if you have never been to Poland, it is well worth a read.
