Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse
5.0
I devoured this book over a couple of days on vacation. Trail of Lightning integrates familiar and not-so familiar elements from urban fantasy and sci-fi dystopia with Indigenous spirituality. The protagonist, Maggie Hoskie, is a woman with supernatural clan powers that endow her with super speed, and a talent for killing. I appreciated Hoskie's inner struggle and liked her a lot as a character. The storytelling is exciting and while some of the tropes are familiar, the book didn't feel predictable.
That said, it's important to note that several Diné writers have criticized Roanhorse for writing about cultural and spiritual traditions that are not her own (she identifies as Black and Pueblo), and violating taboo by disclosing details she should not have. I can't comment on that specifically but I encourage readers to look up the perspectives of other Indigenous writers and community members who have shared their thoughts about Roanhorse's work.
