Defiance by C.J. Redwine
4.0
*Maybe a 3.75 or 3.80?*
I'm going to start off by saying that this was not the most amazing or mind blowing novel I've ever read. It was pretty standard and typical YA. The world building and plot were nothing special but despite all of that, it kept me interested and overall I enjoyed it. I still want to read the other two books, so that means something was done right. I was never annoyed with the plot or hated anything, it just was nothing special and did feel a little shallow at times.
What I DID like about this book;
1. C.J. Redwine's writing. I thought it was beautiful and descriptive while never being over the top. I'm starting to realize how much I don't like first person POV, especially when we have multiple character chapters. I feel it can be a little annoying and awkward and when we have multiple character's it can just be confusing. I often can't remember what character the chapter is being told by if it's not distinct enough or not done right by the author. I didn't feel like that at all while reading this book! It all flowed really nicely and each character was distinct and different.
2. The characters. I loved these characters and loved getting to know them. They were flawed, made stupid decisions sometimes, and were relatively interesting.
3. The romance. I think Logan and Rachael are my new favorite ship! There was a bit of hate to love (one of my favorite tropes), they supported each other, and in times of hardship and grief they stood by each other and crawled through together. I also really like the way these characters dealt with grief, and the different ways they dealt with it. I felt like it was done in a really great way.
So yeah, overall there was a lot of things I enjoyed! Nothing extremely mind blowing, but definitely enough to make me want to read the other two books in the series. I read this book in a whole day and a little exhausted from it so I'm not immediately jumping into book two. I started another book and then will be reading it.
