Anna is a witch who has been taught to fear magic by her aunt. However, when she meets Attis and Effie, her interest in magic sparks and she starts to question whether her aunt might be wrong about magic all along.

I really adored this book, particularly the characters. I thought that the characters were very well-written and believable. I particularly adored Rowan’s mother who sadly wasn't shown very much throughout the book, but I hope to see more of her in the sequel.

An interesting theme that the book explores is how the way you are raised influences you. You see the main character and how she was raised, and you see the implications of that through her actions. The same was seen with the character Miranda (Manda) though you don't hear as much about her childhood.

The ending of the book was particularly gripping. I was laughing, crying, frustrated and just going through a rollercoaster of emotions! I could not put the book down and binged the last 200 pages in one sitting.

Whilst the ending was very fast paced, I did find that for about half the book, it was a little slow paced. I did struggle to get into it a little at the beginning but once I started, I struggled to stop. As well as the pace at the beginning, I was able to predict where some parts of the plot where going, though not completely. A little bit of clichĂ© never hurt anyone, it was overwhelming and so I wasn't too fussed about it.

This book does however have some hard hitting topics. It is quite heavy on domestic abuse and may be a little hard for some readers. This book had a tendency to flick between some very hard topics, which give it more of an adult book feel, and more YA book feel. Though this did not affect me, some readers may find it quite difficult for some readers who don't tend to enjoy YA books.

This book is the first part of a series and the second book is due to come out in May 2024. Though there are some loose ends, the book is generally well-rounded off and most plot points are covered and completed.

This was one of my absolute favourite reads of the year. I adored the writing and I am definitely going to preorder the second book. Some readers may not enjoy it either due to the hard topics or the YA-esk genre, but I personally thoroughly enjoyed it and would highly recommend it.
