The Comet by W.E.B. Du Bois

5.0

This short story had impact on me that was inversely proportionate to its length. The premise is that a comet brings about the demise of everyone in New York City, except for a black man and a white woman. The story of how they come to grips with their situation, and how their relationship changes as they realize that they are the sole survivors and no longer subject to the stereotypes that society had assigned to them, is particularly relevant today. A word of warning - this story was written in 1920, and although it holds up well, it does contain some language and depictions of racism that some find objectionable. However, they are not gratuitous, and are really integral to the story. Just something to bear in mind.
