The Night Country by Melissa Albert

5.0

This is the type of book that, when you come back after a long time of not reading, it reminds you why you read.

pros:
- the writing is extraordinary and it makes me terribly jealous. It's half poetry and full of metaphors that make everything so vivid and visual
- the story is fascinating and so so original and inventive
- I love the characters, a perfect mix of just doing their best and fighting being a monster
- I loved how Albert makes you feel homesick for our own world and remember all the good things about it
- Sophia was wonderful as a side character, fully developed and painful to see go

cons:
- I couldn't figure out the ending. Did the sleeping part of Manhatten stay asleep? did all those people effectively die? it didn't seem to be clear

amazing book, would love to reread. if my copy wasn't a library book i'd be itching to underline every other sentence for how lovely it is
