I Accidentally Summoned a Demon Boyfriend by Jessica Cage

3.5

There were a lot of things I loved about this book beyond its gorgeous cover. This was a very cute and witty read and the characters were very engaging. I thoroughly enjoyed the push and pull between Rayna and Metis. One of my absolute favourite things about it was that Rayna was able to call Metis out on his shit, especially when it came to him blaming her for things that were out of her control. The plot was really interesting and it was nice to see the progression of their relationship through the story. With that being said, some things bothered me.

From the get-go, I found a lot of the dialogue and inner monologue to be pretty cringy and I found some of the things said or to be unnecessary. Because of this, it did take me a couple of chapters (150+ pages on my phone) to really get into the story, though once I did I had a lot of fun with it. A lot of the dialogue, particularly when Rayna and Metis first meet, was incredibly repetitive and while I understand that the character's shock at the situation plays into that it would have been nice to see some variation in the interactions. One of the things I loved most about Rayna was how witty, sarcastic and no-nonsense she was and it would have been nice to see her stump him once or twice despite the outcome remaining the same.

Some of the developmental parts of their relationship felt a bit abrupt to me. While his feelings were obviously developing for her throughout the book, his switch from "tolerating her" to "if anything happened to her I'd kill everyone in the room and then myself" was very fast and without much prompt. I was also a bit confused about Rayna's outlook on dating. She desperately wants a partner, enough that she actively suffers through bad date after bad date, but according to her friend is very petty and drops guys for small reasons (though someone saying she has "childbearing hips" felt like a pretty good reason to me). On top of that, she apparently made the decision a decade ago that she didn't want to marry (something about her that was not established until much later in the book), which is a perfectly fine decision to make but if that's the case why are you so upset you don't have a partner? Her motivations and feelings when it came to relationships felt very wishy-washy to me. However, I will say one of my favourite scenes was when she laid out to Metis why dating is such a difficult thing for her as a Black woman.

This book is a very fun and easy read if you're not looking for anything that requires a lot of commitment. Anything I mentioned that bothered me is completely personal preference and I can see a lot of people really loving this!

I received a free ARC copy of this book via Booksprout and I'm very thankful to the author for giving me the opportunity to read it.
