Taking course over a single holiday weekend, New Zealander Chloe Lane’s compact debut novel brims with symbolism and dark humor. Twenty-six-year-old art curator Erin has been summoned to her single mother’s childhood home for her family’s annual gathering, only to learn that her mother, who has a neurodegenerative disease, has chosen to end her life in just a few days’ time. All former competitive swimmers, Erin, her mother, and her mother’s sister each grieve the loss of their athletic prowess differently. The relationships between them blossom and change amidst quirky small-town antics and the fallout of romantic affairs, all tense with the knowledge that their plan is not exactly legal. This novel thoughtfully follows three strong, deeply flawed women who come together to release one of their own.
