1936: Book Woman aka Bluet aka Cussy Mary Carter is Troublesome Creek’s pack librarian. She rides her mule through the Appalachian Mountains to deliver reading materials to those that need them most. Cussy is also one of the last known blue people of Kentucky. That is, her skin takes on a blue hue that has been passed from generation to generation.
Despite facing discrimination and bigotry because of her skin, Cussy continues to deliver books, treat her readers with compassion, and share the joys of reading to anyone she can.
This was a great historical-fiction novel. I loved seeing the world through Cussy’s eyes and rooting for all the characters. A solid read.
