Nothing to Envy: Real Lives in North Korea by Barbara Demick
5.0
This is my second book on North Korea and I think this is an excellent place to start. Demick manages to interweave multiple people's stories into one seamless flow, each narrative bleeding into one another and yet managing to remain whole and unique. She also captures the complex array of emotions and thoughts of defectors, from their guilt of abandoning their family as well as their country and their gradual disassociation from North Korea. It's a heartbreaking read and difficult to stomach at times as Demick reports the despicable living condition and corruption whilst never dehumanising the people at its core, even as they are forced to do anything they can to survive and escape. Brilliantly researched and detailed, Nothing to Envy will stay with me for a long time and will enlighten many who know little about the hermit country.
