City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

5.0

Rounded up from around 4.5 stars ⭐️ This book was so far out of my comfort zone but I do not regret it one bit!

City of Bones follows Clary, a young teen who’s life is suddenly thrown upside down when she starts seeing things that others can’t. After meeting three demon hunters in a nightclub, her life will change forever.

I’m not normally someone who reaches for a fantasy novel. After being given a copy of the books in this series by a family member, my friend encouraged me to join her in buddy reading this book and I am so so glad she did. I loved reading something so completely different to what I usually pick up. I feel I have dipped my toe into the fantasy book world, but this is only the beginning of my journey. I would say this is a great book for fantasy novel beginners like myself, it’s easy to follow and the setting in New York gives it a relatable twist.

The amount of twist and turns in this novel left me absolutely reeling. I’m still trying to process exactly what happened. Every time I thought things were stable, a new unexpected plot twist would emerge. I absolutely loved being kept on my toes. Unfortunately for me there were a couple of parts of the book that felt similar to other things I’ve read before (hence the loss of half a star). But other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. I am really excited to read the other books in this series.

I would recommend this book to any fantasy novel fans, or anyone who fancies giving fantasy novels a try (like myself)!
