I love historical fiction novels, but I found myself limited in the era’s I have been reading. I really wanted to branch out and managed to do that with this novel.

The Song of Achilles tells the story of Patroclus and Achilles. Two young men who’s bond and friendship blossoms over the years. But a war pulls them away from their home and towards a different journey.

I always loved learning about Ancient Greek myths in school. I had been wanting to delve more into this area as an adult. This novel was my initial dip into this area and I really enjoyed it. It was informative but in an easy manner. I admit, I struggled a little with the names at times, but that is not the fault of Miller. This is the first LGBTQ+ book I have ever read, I particularly loved that the romance was very different to what might typically be seen. The bond felt real, wholesome and heart-warming.

I loved the beginning and end sections. The last couple of lines of the book really moved me, making me feel emotional and overwhelmed. However, I found the middle section, involving the war, was a little slow. That being said, the war was meant to have lasted over a decade, so it makes sense that it was a long period of very similar situations. Miller’s writing is sublime, with vivid and haunting descriptions!

I would recommend this to anyone that loves historical novels with a touch of war and romance, especially if you want to learn more about Greek mythology.
