The Hills of Estrella Roja by Ashley Robin Franklin
medium-paced
4.0
I would rate the art and coloring of this book 5 🌟
Overall a brilliantly illustrated and magnificently colored graphic novel. I genuinely can’t stress enough how pleasurable and captivating the color palette is. For me, the color and art is why I read graphic novels. There was so much use of fun and interesting hues throughout and it was so neat how there are chunks of the book in black layout pages to show nighttime. This was the first book I’d read that framed the nighttime pages in all black and it was an aesthetically bold choice.
I read this over the span of a couple weeks. Storyline wise, it was not the kind of graphic novel that I tore through in one sitting, but that’s okay! The desert scenes and the flora were so pretty that I had to properly appreciate each frame. I didn’t anticipate some of the turns toward the end of the novel and I liked that I kept wondering what the heck was going on in the hills of Estrella Roja. Bonus points for the cute queer crush vibes throughout.
