The Path to Power: The Years of Lyndon Johnson I by Robert A. Caro

5.0

I bookmarked entire chapters to share with my husband. Incredibly compelling storytelling, and a great sense of place and local culture (I read this in preparation for a trip to Texas Hill Country).

One qualm is that the political lives of women and non-white groups are downplayed here - although Caro’s writing about the lives of Hill Country women is often celebrated (and based in large part on research led by his wife Ina), he writes of Lady Bird Johnson so disparagingly that one wonders how much is true and how much of LBJ’s kool-aid he has drunk and accepted. One can only wonder which other stories he is leaving out.
