“There is such a nonchalance in his voice that for a second I’m destabilized, as though I’m in a parallel reality where everything is distorted and I can’t trust what I know to be true.”

As someone who has just left a scary relationship like this, this story was a little too on the nose for me. It was like seeing pieces of my relationship in fiction. The quote above was very much like a huge aspect of my relationship with someone with a cluster-b personality disorder. I know that isn’t really brought up in this story, and I’m not trying to armchair diagnose Dominic, but good god was his behavior like so eerily like what I’ve experienced. I even have traumatic brain injury from a car accident and my ex would use that to gaslight me so often.

I guess this is less a review and more a “holy crap I’ve experienced these things too.” So, to anyone who has had a relationship like this, please know that I empathize from the bottom of my heart. We’ll heal and we will thrive.
