A Mirror Mended by Alix E. Harrow

4 stars

Zinnia Gray, chaotic bisexual, and saver of damsels in distress is back in another novella where she gets pulled into a version of Snow White instead of Sleeping Beauty. A Mirror Mended, the second installment in Harrow's Fractured Fables series follows as Zinnia gets kidnapped by the evil queen of Snow White who wants to escape her bitter end. I loved this part as much as the previous book, but maybe liked this one a bit more because of the slow-burn romance and the hot evil queen that reminded me of my Lana Parilla- Regina Mills phase from OUAT. I loved the pop culture references and Zinnia's brilliant narrative voice. Harrow really nailed the humor in this one, I couldn't stop cackling out loud after every few pages! I love the way both the novellas handled the retelling of fairy tales and the dissection of gender tropes and misogyny embedded in these stories. The way narrative agency is an actual thing and plays a big role in world-building was really cool and unique.
I was a bit confused by the ending, probably because I had forgotten about some stuff that happened in book 1, but it was a nice bittersweet yet hopeful ending. I do want to discuss it with someone (maybe the author on twitter?) because I still feel like I didn't understand it properly.

One thing is for sure, Alix. E. Harrow never disappoints! By now I have read all of her novellas and full-length novels and most of her short stories, and I have loved every single one. An insta-buy favorite author.
