Skyward by Brandon Sanderson
5.0
One average day, a sleep deprived human being joined a buddy-read to not miss out her chance to start her first ever Brandon Sanderson book. After a reading chapter she was already interested. three chapters passed, she was invested and was liking the book. Then six chapters later, she was raving, and gushing, and fangirling over her new-favorite. She loves skyward and she thinks about it at night, not helping her sleep routine akjskska.
Skyward, a YA sci-fi book by the truly amazing, Brandon Sanderson, should be illegal for effortlessly capturing my heart(or im just exaggerating) or I'm just that type of person to easily fall in love with books with a good found-family trope.
The planet on which the human race is trapped has been constantly getting attacked by alien starfighters, The Krell, for years. They desperately need good pilots to defend their home from those aliens. Our main character, Spensa, had always wanted to be a fighter pilot, to go to the flight school, and to soar high above. Yet, no one has ever forgotten what Spensa's father did, and no one has ever let Spensa forget about it. Because of their reputation, her chances of being a pilot are slim. However, when she encounters the wreckage of an ancient ship, she soon realizes her chances might expand. Though there's one troubling thing, her unique ship appears to have a soul.
“People need stories, child. They bring us hope, and that hope is real. If that’s the case, then what does it matter whether the people in them actually lived?”
This book was actually hard to review. I have a lot to say but at the same time I don't know what to say (if that makes sense). The bottom line is: I loved and enjoyed this book so much. I'm not usually a sci-fi reader but after reading this, i kept finding book recs that have the same vibes as this book.
The plot was engaging and adventurous. It was honestly better than what I expected. I was extremely invested and gripped the whole time. I loved it when those intense space battle bottles always kept me on the edge of my seat. it was also fast paced, a lot of things were happening and… don't forget the plot twists! I swear I didn't see everything coming. It was sooo sooo good.
Brandon Sanderson's writing style was very easy to read and also special at the same time. This was written from a first person perspective and I liked to be inside Spensa's energetic head. In some parts, there were images of the ships and I loved how it added to the intriguing world-building. It also helped imagine the vibes and the atmosphere of this book.
Now for the characters!! With perfect dynamics!! banter!! and especially, found-family!!

The characters were all well written with diversity and character development. I wholeheartedly fell in love with the whole flight team. They gave me so much and Ender's Games vibes, which is a movie I deeply loved when I was young. The teamwork, the chemistry, the relationships, all *chef's kiss*! There were several times where I only wanted to cry, scream, and shriek for joy because of their team.
Spensa, our energetic, smart, chaotic, stubborn, and determined main character. To be honest, before starting this I thought she'd be a chosen-one, special snowflake-y YA protagonist, but how pathetic of me to have that idea. She's not perfect and her flaws just made her more likeable and realistic. I love her with her fun personality!
M-bot was so cool, he's by far the best airship I've ever known. And for the whole skyward crew, I live for them. They made me smile, laugh, and also cry a bit. They had flaws which made them realistic and certainly more likeable.
“The most wonderful sound ever is the lamentations of my enemies, screaming my name toward the heavens with ragged, dying voices.”
The girl looked at me, cocking her head. “Well bless your stars.”
All in all, I loved this. I couldn't believe I procrastinated this review for so long, I honestly had no more things to say other than how I'm enjoying this book. I am excited to read the sequels of this and I am certainly hyped up to start other Brando Sando's works.
