This book is dark and twisty as you would expect a serial killer book to be. However, it also has a cozy feeling to it. Maybe because it’s a British crime mystery. It centers on DCI John Drake, the detective in charge of The Family Man murder investigation - a serial killer who kills the husbands and children while the wife is forced to watch and then she is spared. Everyone thinks the killer was caught and then killed himself. However, now years later it appears the Family Man is back. Did they get the wrong guy? Is it a copycat? Or maybe a partner? This time DCI Drake is joined by DS Wilkington, a new and eager and incredibly smart and driven woman. And this is her first murder investigation. She brings a fresh perspective and is a great character. So is John Drake. The man who wants to solve this once and for all while at the same time fighting for his marriage. This small town also has some strange and in some cases horrifying characters, which is what keeps you guessing. There is also a family that is new to area and appears to be the Family Man’s next victims. However, this family has trouble and secrets of their own. Can Drake and Wilkington solve this in time?
The ending is heartbreaking and savage. This is by no means a cozy mystery but rather a thriller/ British crime novel that should get more attention.
