Oh, Brother by Rebecca Paulinyi

4.0

Silence is more relaxing than words and lies and feelings.

We all have been there, blaming ourselves for certain situations we have no power over. Or trying to be strong, heck trying to PRETEND to be strong for the sake of others while secretly we are falling apart.

Lily is a fifteen year old nerdy girl who argues with her brother regularly. I bet we all have a sibling who is a poler opposite of us, who irritates the heck of us. As if their sole reason of existence is to irritate us if nothing else. Hell.. I have a sister like that!! We are always on each others throats.. Nagging, teasing each other.. I guess thats what siblings do. So Lily has this pain in the as*, self-obsessed, football maniac big brother named Sam. Until one day she hasn’t. Sam is shot and died on the spot.

“Oh, Brother” is a contemporary fiction that deals with grief, family issues and learning to live with it.

When normality becomes an act there is only so long that you can keep it up. Now it’s starting to fall apart around me and I haven’t a clue how long I can last or what to do to bring myself back to the surface.

The only paranormal thing in this book is that Lily could still see Sam. Other than this there are nothing paranormal about it. The book focuses mainly on Lily and that, having to deal with everything else like grieving parents, brothers girlfriend, herself, she also had to deal with her brother whom no one else can see, who is frustrated because of his new status and depressed due to the pain he is putting everybody in though it hardly is his fault.

“Oh, Brother” was an enjoyable read with lots of sibling fights. It is also a book with a lot of heavy moments. It is a book that had me thinking how easily we take things for granted.
