All That's Left in the World by Erik J. Brown

5.0

I need to start by saying that I have no negative feedback about this book.

I don't read a lot of YA but I'm so happy I read this one!

I was hooked from page 1. Jamie and Andrew are such lovable and relatable characters that's impossible not to care about them from the very start. Even when I knew nothing but their names and their starting points, I wanted them to be happy and safe.

The author did an absolutely fantastic job of slowly developing both MC's characters and their relationship with each other. It's perfectly paced with exactly the right balance of drama and tender, quiet moments. Both Jamie and Andrew are so well rounded and perfectly written, as are the colorful array of side characters.

It was sort of refreshing to read an apocalyptic plot that wasn't based on sci-fi themes or paranormal elements. The loneliness, stillness, quietness and wildness of the world in the aftermath of a superflu was so well written and easy to get lost in.

Beside the main plot (which is very engaging/exciting/terrifying), Erik J Brown did a fantastic job of scattering wider questions and themes that invoked feelings that hit me pretty hard as a queer person.

Overall I have to say that felt all the feelings as read this. Every character and plot point felt alive and so important.

I'm off to download the sequel, I'm not ready to move on from Andrew and Jamie's story just yet.
