This was fine. It was a quick and entertaining read but didn’t stand out in any major way for me. For rating purposes I’m just gonna compare this to my other recent short read which was A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking and I must say that I liked the lighthearted cuteness of the Kingfisher book more than the darker tones of this novel. Which is a bit of a weird thing to say by the way since I usually tend to gravitate more to darker toned books but that’s what I’m going with for now!

I found the characters overall to be pretty fun but also a bit bland and just not too original but some of their wackiness was responsible for a few good laughs which was very much appreciated.

The plot felt engaging and was also able to move you forward but on the other hand I found the central Mystery to be not very compelling and at times it even felt annoying since a lot of it seemed to rely on withholding information from the reader. But on the other hand when stuff actually was revealed the main character always did that in a pretty fun and just frankly ridiculous kind of way that just puts a smile on your face.

Writing this I’m thinking the best way to compare this book is to an average Monster of the Week type episode of a TV show like Supernatural or Buffy. They are entertaining but also leave you wanting something more out of it.
