This book has been on and off my TBR list so many times, as I was unsure whether I’d enjoy it, but I needn’t have worried, cause this book is … absolutely remarkable!!!
I have so many things to say about this book, and not a single thing is bad! It’s so so funny, incredibly entertaining, and outlandish in the best way possible! Hank Green somehow blends NA contemporary and science fiction seamlessly, while also filling the book to the brim with (very relevant and scarily accurate) political and societal commentary! But more than all of these elements, what I loved most, was April herself.
It has very rarely happened that I have related to wholeheartedly to a character despite the absurdity of the circumstances they’re in, but as a queer woman in her early twenties I see myself in her! She does and thinks stupid, sometimes horrible, things, and she’s misguided a lot of the time, but she does everything from a place of goodwill! She’s kind, but also selfish, and she doesn’t handle fame very well but still tries her best, and I love her so very much!!
Part of the reason this book works so well, and why April seems so very human, is that it is written like April is telling her story retrospectively, directly to the reader. We get to know about all of the things she understands or regrets in hindsight, and it gives the story so much personality, while also making it beautifully paced!
This has a somewhat ambiguous ending, and while that’s not something I usually love, it works perfectly in this case, so I’m a little afraid but nonetheless excited to see what happens in A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor! I could keep gushing about this forever, but I’ll just end this review with the fact that this has become an instant top-10 favorite of mine!
