Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
3.0
I enjoyed this though I went into it thinking I'd like it a lot more than I did. I think that's due in large part to the narrator.
Frankie Corzo, who narrates this audiobook, does a fine job with everything except an English accent. But four of the half-dozen main characters have English accents, and they do a lot of talking. So every time she read their dialogue, I just cringed.
Otherwise, it's an interesting story and plays to a lot of fun Gothic tropes. I think the action could have been better written--though the last twenty minutes (maybe the final two chapters?) were solid--and I'd have very much preferred the romantic relationship to be between Noemi and the young doctor instead of between her and Francis.
