The Long Goodbye by Meghan O'Rourke
3.0
Parts of this book are very good indeed, but overall, it doesn't sing. Perhaps I am getting persnickety in my older age, but I find many books uneven in tone, and basic writing. I shall blame the lack of copy editors and move on.
This is a book about the year following the loss of the author's beloved mother. She does delve into the grief industry and its research, some of it very helpful and some of it completely useless when one is actively in that state. I feel there are some missing dots, but having been to this rodeo with the loss of 2 sisters (5 years apart) and then our father, my issue with the book may be that she didn't hit on all of my own aspects of grief. She had some that I did not.
This is a good book for someone who is NOT suffering the lost of a loved one in the past year. But then, given the vagaries of human behavior, who am I to limit anyone? Anyway, it's worth a read.
