The September House by Carissa Orlando

4.0

I read this as part of my project to read all of the books nominated for a 2023 Goodreads Choice Award in the debut category.

I really had to sit with my feelings here. I think it's partially because I don't read horror very often, so it feels like I'm missing a bit of a frame of reference. That said, I appreciated the way this book begins a bit absurd with its take on a haunted house, and then that tone and framing shifts and becomes something much more sinister. I think this did an excellent job comparing a haunted house to a haunted existence if you will. The parallels it draws between the reasons the main character wouldn't leave this structure and the reasons she wouldn't leave certain people were effective.

I'm less sure about the mental health pieces of it at the end, but over all, I gobbled this up and have thought about it frequently since I finished reading.
