Definitely written for a younger audience. I appreciated the cleverness with which Smith reworked the original Nutcracker story; however, even after having played the ballet twenty-some times, I did wish I'd read the original story. I'm not sure a middle-grade reader would have enough background with either one, in which it just becomes a strange adventure story.
