I’ll keep this brief: I love this series. I loved it when I was ten years old, and I am pleasantly surprised to find I still love it eight years later. My favourite thing in books in found family, group dynamic, character-driven plots, and The Dragonet Prophecy delivers on all fronts. Sutherland makes a fantastic choice in having Clay, so family-oriented and lovable, be the one to introduce himself and his siblings—there’s an instant connection made there between the reader and the characters, and I love Clay’s narrative. This is a middle grade series, though it doesn’t read like one—though perhaps that’d be my only criticism; for something pitched towards nine-year-olds, there’s an awful lot of graphic depictions of gore and death. Although, I read it first at ten, and I’m personally not scarred, nor do I remember being so; I think the more YA aspects of it, like the violence, made the whole series more interesting and shocking. All in all though, a fast-paced, very promising debut to the Wings of Fire series, and definitely one I’m sure I’ll be revisiting even in another few years.
