The Winner's Curse by Marie Rutkoski

5.0

From Vanessa:
Here is a book where a heroine’s strength lies not in physical prowess, but in wit. Beautifully written and heartbreaking and complicated, this book follows the POV of two star-crossed souls: Kestrel, the daughter of a military general living in a land conquered by the Empire; and Arin, a slave she purchases who yearns for the freedom of his people. Neither side is wholly innocent, and you find yourself wanting both Kestrel and Arin to succeed – though of course, it’s never that easy. This book sucked me in from the first few pages, and I couldn’t put it down until I turned the last. Definitely a must-read for fans of Kristin Cashore or Tamora Pierce.

From Ali:
I love Marie Rutkoski! She always does an excellent job of creating full and interesting new worlds, as well as characters that really seem like complete and real people. Loved this fantasy novel!
