It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover

3.0

This book is hyped so much, imagine my shock when the characters read as absolute caricatures. Ryle annoyed me from the beginning. There's nothing to like about him personality-wise, guy has anger issues (literally the first scene), all he craves for is sex (he legit begged, ew) and hates commitment (this was never explained). But our main character, Lily, is often hot and bothered by this weirdo.

Lily reads like a dumb girl for the most part. It's never explained what draws her to Ryle and why she hurriedly went through all stages of a relationship with him. These two discussed their concerns on a fucking flight, like what's the hurry? You barely even know him!

None of the initial interactions between Ryle and Lily have substance, it's either sex or something so stupid/obnoxious, it made me roll my eyes. The parts that carried the plot were the diary entries. It had actual stories of abuse Lily's mother endured. I can't excuse Atlas-Lily's relationship as kids since it's technically pedophilia, but what they had was so much better than what Ryle-Lily have. Until, even this Utopia shatters.

From the first incident with Ryle, this book became so frustrating. It was so frustrating to see Lily in situations she should not be in, seeing her excuse behaviors, seeing her go back to him. I hated her but I hated him more. Every time it would seem like Ryle would be forgiven, I'd want to throw the damn book away because such behavior should never be excused.

To be fair, Ryle-Lily had a shaky relationship to begin with. All they did was fuck, there was no trust since they barely opened up outside of Naked Truths. They basically zoomed through all stages without ever having a proper conversation about their pasts and futures. How in the world was it supposed to work?

I'm happy with the ending as it didn't go the way I feared it would. I loved the growth in the mother-daughter bond, what a strong woman her mother is! And my man Atlas, who had me rooting for him from the get-go. This man didn't do anything remotely romantic, they were always simple gestures that expressed his love for her. He's probably the first male character that has made me gasp in happiness for him.

The book had a good message but it could have been executed in a better way. I give it a 3 stars. But, I can't wait to read the sequel, purely due to Atlas lmao!
