I chose to listen to this book instead of re-reading it, and what a great idea that was! Helen Laser voices the very sharp tone of June's words so well, it's truly immersive. Yellowface isn't Kuang's greatest novel, and sometimes seems a bit "shallow" (which I think is mostly due to the unreliable narrator&the first person narration which doesn't allow for additional comments). It's still a great story which demands a lot of "work" from its readers : you have to critique what you're reading, or you're just falling for what the protagonist is trying to convince herself of. Kuang does this brand of white entitlement and self indulgence extremely well tho and it makes for a compelling tale.
