The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell

3.25

After hearing a few whispers about this read and also seeing that it was set in Italy and about a Medici during the renaissance, I was interested. I try and read broadly as a Historical Fiction lover and was keen to be swept away to Italy.

Here's what I liked:
- How immersed I was as a reader in Lucrezia's world. The descriptions of the buildings, rooms and surrounds were so vivid.
-Relationship between Lucrezia and her nurse Sofia and maid Emilia. Strong female friendships was one of the redeeming features of the novel for me.
-Flicking between past and present times made it motivating to read.
-Heartbreaking yet clever ending, enjoyed how the ending is reimagined and how much that has kept me thinking.
-Informative author's note to end.

Here's what I didn't:
-I don't think this book was worth the hype for me. Whilst I appreciate the beautiful writing and descriptions of scenes, it felt incredibly slow. I would be more interested in a sequel however...
