Unnatural Volume 1: Awakening by Mirka Andolfo

4.0

This was surprising, but good.

I randomly decided to check this out from Hoopla. I'd passed it over and over again and then I decided that it was time to give a try. Surprisingly, I wasn't disappointed. I didn't know much about the premise. In fact, I'm pretty sure I didn't read a summary. Unnatural focuses on an animal society where citizens are forced to connect and "mate" with animals of the same species and only in heterosexual relationships. If citizens break these rules then they face fines and imprisonments. In order to help their citizens, this "society" has also established a dating program that all individuals are forcefully entered into by the time they turn 25. Leslie not only has trouble fitting into this society, but she also has "illegal" dreams about having sex with a wolf. When she turns 25 everything changes.

At first, I thought that this was going to be just an erotic comic book series, but it was so much more. There was action, intrigue, myth/legend, murder, and mystery. It took a lot of different twists and turns that I didn't anticipate. This is definitely not a comic book to judge on service level. It has a lot to offer and it's a short series (only three volumes). I immediately checked out the second volume because it was just that interesting. And the artwork is amazing. It so bright and carefully lined and inked. The smallest details (like the sushi that Leslie loves) are drawn with care and appreciation.

My only criticism is that I felt like one characters death was a little unnecessary. I feel like they didn't necessarily have to die and part of it felt like it was a judgement made to move the plot forward. I'm hoping that this is explained and delved into a little bit further in the second volume. Overall, it was a solid start and I really enjoyed it.
