Alpha & Omega by Patricia Briggs

It's hard to review this book because the first time I read it was quite a few years ago.
I found this novella very refreshing, especially for a romance novel. (I don't know if I would actually classify the series as romance, since the romance isn't the main driving plot of the stories, but I came across it listed as one and thought it was supposed to be when I read it.)
It was enjoyable to have characters with real issues and challenges to work through, instead of their main conflict consisting of them just being stupid/not talking to each other. I liked how she really went there with those issues as well, without softening the edges, it made it more realistic and compelling. That carries into the world building as well, and I really liked that it had atypical components from other paranormal stories (such as it taking a long time and being painful to change into a wolf).
My main complaint is it is a novella, and because it is rather short you just barely get into the story and parts of it seem resolved too quickly. That aside though, it's enjoyable and it made me excited to continue on with the series.
