I know it's a short story so not exactly the usual room to fully develop the characters, but I guess I was hoping for something a bit better. Most people were gushing over how great Ali Hazelwood was so I expected it to be pretty good and it was just okay. There were a lot of weird phrases that made me roll my eyes and sometimes cringe. I dunno if it's the gaming space that the author isn't totally familiar with or if she always writes like this. I just don't think I cared for it that much, I guess. It wasn't terrible or anything, but for an author with tons of praise heaped onto previous books, I was definitely expecting more. I also really didn't care for the narrator that much so that could have played a part.
