Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor
4.0
I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about this book. I had high hopes going in because I loved Laini Taylor's Strange the Dreamer series but when I started this one things felt weird. Though there was a lot of mystery and I wanted to figure out what the hell was going on so I pushed forth. I will say this is definitely a book you can tell was written in 2011 but regardless of that, I loved it in the end. I think there was a lot of room for Laini Taylor to make this a boring and/or confusing book, but somehow she managed to tie everything up perfectly in my opinion. While there were a bunch of jumps back and forth I was never extremely confused and rather quickly found my ground again. Which props to her for succeeding in that because if I was writing this book I would have fucked up and confused even myself. We don't get a lot of world-building or character growth until the end but I found I didn't mind that too much knowing this was the start of a trilogy.
I've been struggling to get my reading groove back again. I don't read nearly as much or as quickly as I did before but I managed to finish this in just a few days when it's been taking me months to finish books sometimes. It's been awhile since I've been made so emotional by a book that I cried. I'm very excited to read the other books in this series and I hope I like them just as much.
