unarguably compelling and spooky but god, are we really still doing the 'pretty girls can't be crazy and/or violent, and *actual* crazy and/or violent women are ugly and unappealing' shit in this year of our lord??

this would have been so much more successful for me if not for declan's wildly inappropriate crush being his major motivating factor and the insistence on describing how hideous and unattractive the mean girls were compared to our perfect and beautiful main character at every turn. gave me such an ick that it overwhelmed a lot of the actually very clever and gripping story
