Jude and her twin sister, Taryn, are mortals who were raised in the faerie realm after Madoc, a faerie general and father of their half-sister, Vivienne, kills their parents. The two have very different ways of navigating their precarious situation; while Taryn does her best to stay out of the way, Jude's temper regularly gets her into trouble with the young faeries with whom they share lessons, particularly Prince Cardan. We follow Jude as she begins to uncover pieces to an intricate puzzle of court intrigue, and is forced to trust the person she likes least in the world.

I like YA fantasy, and this book was recommended to me by a friend, but I was a bit disappointed in it overall. Part of that is just because I am always turned off by protagonists who are particularly violent. I also read Sarah J. Maas' A Court of Thrones and Roses series recently, and the general characters, setting, and the enemies-to-lovers dynamic were quite similar (although I think I prefer A Cruel Prince so far!).
