T&T&T is about video games in the same way “The League” is about fantasy football: it’s what unites the characters and if you love them it will add to your enjoyment, but the book is really about relationships (specifically platonic love between men and women). The writing is poor (prose, dialogue, character building, etc.) so it is really relies on narrative between Sam and Sadie (I would call it a triangle if the third, Marx, wasn’t so plastic). The sweet charm which makes them childhood playmates doesn’t carry over into their adult life, where their own again, off again friendship plays out quite melodramatically. Capturing the majesty of gaming on the page is as difficult as trying to recreate the emotional movement of music, so I didn’t expect much more than piquing nostalgia, and it delivered. Although she touches on subjects such as appropriation, women’s representation and treatment (specifically in the workplace), and gun violence, she doesn’t really say much about most of these. All in all, it is an interesting concept with some well meaning ideas that ultimately fell short for me.
