Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates

5.0

If you've ever wondered what it feels like to be in someone else's shoes, this is a must-read. While I am Latina, I will never know what it feels like to be African American. Coates gives readers insight into the continued feeling of vulnerability black Americans feel. At moments, he even addresses how it may seem irrational or unwarranted, but then supports the feeling with what feels like endless examples. At moments, I felt hopeless as I read. There doesn't seem to be an end to the value many in this country put on the color of one's skin, but even while the book ends on a hard note, I felt hope. Small things such as reading the book, talking about it, sharing it, writing this review help to grow awareness and creates empathy. It made me want to be better.
