I was thinking of giving this 4 stars, but I'm giving it 3.5 instead because some things here truly infuriated me. First of all, I only read book 1 from this series previously, so perhaps part of my enjoyment suffered a bit because of that but overall I liked the story, except for some aspects from it.
This was definitely too long, which is something I wouldn't mind when it feels right, but this wasn't the case. The book didn't hit as much as it could because there were many unnecessary scenes, too much that I had to skip pages. It felt more as a book where everyone had their main character moment, instead of being centered around Cas and Raleigh. It also felt jarring that Raleigh's POV was told in first person, while Cas was in third.
Now onto the reason why I'm deciding on a lower rate, despite loving the romance between the main couple and the family theme. My main problem was the It truly rubs me off wrong that Raleigh's abusive ex mate . What the fuck? For a book that has a survivor of abuse as a MC, he was treated poorly by the author. It felt like Cas was the only one who had brain, while everyone else wanted . Absolutely no, ruined most of it for me.
Other than that, everything else was great. The story was intriguing and I love a good hurt/comfort book. Sadly I couldn't overlook that decission from the author, it pissed me off too much. Last thing I want to add is that I really liked the cast and other pairings, but I wished there were less of their moments to make it feel more cohesive. I'd also love to read a book about Julius, not sure if there is one if there will ever be, but I got hooked up with his story.
