A stunning example of telling big stories by focussing on small parts. Not to downplay the trauma each individual Jewish family underwent during the Shoah, or the bravery of individual resistance members. But rather than trying to write about the entire, massive, horrific occurrence, zooming in on one family’s experience, especially through the eyes of a frightened child who barely understands what’s happening (but dearly wants to, and cares deeply), was highly effective.
