The Gospel of Wellness by Rina Raphael

As soon as I read the synopsis for this book, I immediately had to read it. I’m fascinated by the wellness industry, and I appreciate Raphael’s thorough investigation.

It’s incredible (not in a good way) how predatory and misleading the wellness industry can be. They target specific individuals, make hyperbolic or just untrue statements, and use scientific lingo to gain trust from their consumers. I think that’s the part that infuriates me most—taking science out of context and misleading folks by sounding “smart”.

But I also really think Raphael’s discussion about WHY people look to the wellness industry is a critical piece of the puzzle—our healthcare system has failed SO many people and left people in pain, untreated, or with a treatment that exacerbates their condition. One of my favorite quotes in the book sums this up perfectly: “If women feel more understood by Gwyneth Paltrow than their own doctor, there’s a problem with medicine”.

The information in this book is not overly academic in style and is easy to follow. I think everyone can learn something from this book, and I highly recommend it!!

Thank you @henryholtbooks for the #gifted copy! The Gospel of Wellness is out now!!
