Well, what have we here? A new favourite historical mystery series? Heck yes!

I am a sucker for a good historical mystery and this is one of the most well-written ones I’ve come across in a while. There is just so much depth to Whishaw’s story telling that it kept me flipping the pages eagerly watching the mystery unfold. The cast of characters within this town are incredibly well rounded and they each have a background that comes into play exactly when you need it.

It took a bit of time to get used to how this book is written because it felt stream of consciousness at first but once I was in the flow, it was perfect. Each scene plays out exactly as it needs to and the flashbacks come in at just the right moments.

You can also tell how this is just the start of an epic continuing story and, even when you think it’s done, something new comes up to keep you on your toes. The way Whishaw writes is masterfully layered and the entirety of the story does so much more than revolve around one mystery. It branches out and brings forward more questions that will come into play in some smart way.

I truly cannot wait to watch Lane’s time in British Columbia unfold and see what new and unexpected things get thrown her way. This is a character that is absolutely fascinating and I commend Whishaw on her work. It is also extremely interesting how the character is based on a member of her own family. I can only imagine the stories she heard.

I read book 1 & 2 over a weekend and read 3 & 4 yesterday so I think it is safe to say that I am hooked. I know I will be caught up to book 8 by the end of summer if the mail makes good time but it’s painful to have to wait!
